October 2002

Some of you are aware of the rapid and recent changes in our path to the mission field.  For those who don't know our recent story, here is a quick update.  We are in Costa Rica, in language school at Cincel, the AG's premier school for Spanish.  Spanish?  Why, Spanish?  Aren't you going to Belgium.

Answer:  The executive committee of International Media Ministry convened at the end of July.  Because of conflicts with Belgian authorities last February that resulted in the deportation of two IMM workers, two other missionaries, and a severe impedance of the work at IMM, the committee has been investigating the possibility of moving the IMM headquarters.

With absolutely no progress of negotiations being made with the Department of the Interior of the Belgian government, the IMM executive committee, on July 25, unanimously voted to move the IMM headquarters.  Where?  Madrid, Spain.

We, that same week completed our itineration and, within days, received final clearance.  The next 30 days were spent completely re-directing our course-
1) language school in Costa Rica (Spanish), not language school in France (French);
2) applications for VISAs to Spain instead of Belgium;
3) preparations for shipping to Spain, instead of Belgium;
4) arranging our children's schooling in Madrid, instead of Brussels.

With a myriad of other details (packing, leaving house and family), our last month in the US was the wildest ride of our lives.

Our first days in Costa Rica have been equally dramatic.  We secured an apartment, signed rental contracts, are buying food and household items (on foot), haling taxis, all in Spanish.  Guess what?  We don't know Spanish.  It has been fun and exciting to say the least.  What an adventure.  We already have great missionary memories.
